Background

Our Class Piano program has been offered for over forty years in Montgomery County Public Schools. The program was first promoted and sponsored by the Montgomery County Council of Parent Teacher Associations (MCCPTA), and  local school's Parent Teacher Associations have assumed sponsorship since 1975 when Class Piano became a non-profit Maryland corporation with non-profit Internal Revenue Service designation.

To provide the best piano instruction at the lowest cost possible:

  • Currently, our class piano program is operating at about one third the cost of private lessons.

To enrich the school program and provide students with the opportunity for piano skill development and with a bridge to beginning instrumental training with school bands and orchestras:

  • Often motivated by their positive experience with class piano lessons,  many of our students take advantage of both piano instruction and beginning instrumental school band and orchestral instruction.

Goals

Classes are held before or after school each week and consist of four to ten pupils in each class. During each lesson students take turns playing on acoustic pianos, electronic keyboards and or simulated keyboards. The competitive stimulus found in a class generally motivates students to greater effort and achievement and a comfort level with performance. Students MUST have a tuned piano or full size electronic keyboard at home for regular practice. Enrollment is for an entire school year.
